The After School Coordinator works closely with program staff under the direction of the Program Director and Assistant Director to develop, coordinate, and implement a high-quality after-school program for school-age children (ages 5-12). The coordinator is responsible for creating a safe, engaging, and supportive environment that promotes the physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development of each child. This position directs daily program activities, provides leadership to staff and volunteers, and develops programs and activities that meet the diverse learning, developmental, and social needs of participants, recognizing the individual strengths and challenges of each child. The After School Coordinator also assists with special projects, events, and program initiatives as assigned and helps ensure the overall success and smooth operation of the program.
Education and Experience Required:
- High school diploma or equivalency.
- Two (2) years of experience working in a childcare environment.
- Child Apprenticeship Certificate CDA or ACDS certification or college courses in early development.
- Knowledge of after school administrative practices.
- Minimum one season of leadership experience in an organized children's after school program or related activity.
Additional Requisites:
- Knowledge and ability to meet the requirements of the State childcare licensing standards.
- Visual acuity permits routine assessment of children, observation of child and staff conduct, and to allow development and use of materials to create a "print rich" environment that includes daily age appropriate reading and literature activities.
- Auditory acuity sufficient to monitor classroom activity and to engage in meaningful communication with children, parents, and staff.
- Expressive communication skills to enable clear guidance to children and staff during routine and emergent situations.
- Work: around moderate noise, stoop, kneel, crouch, and lift or carry up to S0lbs.
- Must meet health requirements established by State licensing standards.
- Be at least 21 years of age.
- Must pass a criminal background check.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Primary Responsibilities:
- Develop, plan, and implement developmentally appropriate educational, recreational, and enrichment activities that support each child's mental, physical, emotional, and social growth.
- Create and maintain a structured daily schedule that promotes positive interactions, guides children's behavior, and minimizes the need for reactive interventions.
- Provide behavioral intervention when necessary, using positive guidance techniques and never resorting to physical or emotional punishment.
- Supervise, coordinate, and oversee classroom and/or summer camp activities and operations.
Staff Supervision and Leadership:
- Provide supervision, guidance, and training to assistant teachers, teacher aides, interns, and volunteers.
- Ensure staff understand classroom procedures, center policies, and appropriate childcare practices.
- Guide staff in recognizing when and how to seek assistance or direction for routine, non-routine, and emergency situations.
- Train and onboard new staff to ensure compliance with organizational policies, procedures, licensing standards, and classroom expectations.
- Communicate policy and procedural updates to staff and oversee implementation.
Child Development and Family Engagement:
- Develop positive relationships with parents and caregivers and encourage family involvement in their child's development and care.
- Communicate center policies and procedures to current and prospective families.
- Conduct parent conferences and complete child assessments according to program requirements and schedules.
- Maintain appropriate records and documentation for each child.
Compliance and Safety:
- Monitor classroom and program operations to ensure continuous compliance with State childcare licensing standards, including all health and safety requirements.
- Maintain organized, clean, and developmentally appropriate learning environments.
- Ensure health and safety routines are consistently implemented and monitored.
- Maintain first aid kits and ensure supplies remain current.
- Dispense medications as directed by parents and/or physicians and ensure all required forms are completed accurately.
- Regularly inspect classrooms, toys, equipment, and facilities for safety concerns and submit repair requests as needed.
Administrative Responsibilities:
- Maintain current and organized child information files and ensure all staff know where records are located.
- Complete required documentation, reporting, and assessments in a timely manner.
- Ensure all program equipment and materials are clean, maintained, and in proper working order. Provide required professional development and career pathway documentation as requested.
- Attend staff meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities as assigned.
